I made this pattern in a straight 18 (usual size for me) with no amendments for sizing, using a plain white polycotton fabric. I added burgundy buttons for extra zing also added an extra one for my needs. I do love this pattern, but next time will use a lighter weight more floaty fabric I think, size down and lengthen it so I don’t need to wear a layer underneath to cover my belly. All in all a lovely pattern, using techniques I needed practice with – buttonholes for one. Not sure about the turn back on the cuffs as I don’t like too much around my wrists/arms and finding them a bit heavy for me, but they do add a little something to the shirt, so for now they can stay. I have paired Archie with the Barry Pants and Blakley Stretch Jeans. More of a summer wear for me but definitely one to make again.

Very nice shirt/light jacket pattern. I did add 5 cm to the bottom to make it fit me better and I am glad I did. Love the little longer back, makes it look different and stylish. Will be making one for spring in lighter fabric.

Loved this pattern but I did make it longer to suit my style and I sized down one size. Easy to follow and looks great – I really am happy with this style.

A fantastic pattern, stylish design and very easy to make. I’ve made two for my granddaughter, one in regular shirting, and one more of a jacket, with machine embroidery to enhance the plain fabric.

I love this shirt pattern. It’s a cropped oversized look which is my favourite shirt style. I used leftover bits of different coloured linens for some fun colour blocking and ended up making another for a friend who loved my shirt. I’m planning to make a few more in different colourways and prints.
The shirt itself is true to size and doesn’t need any altering, it is quite short and loose so I wear it over tank tops as more of a light jacket or layer it with dresses.
I made a few changes by leaving off the sleeve cuff and doing a 3cm contrasting facing on the inside sleeve instead, which makes the sleeve 3/4 length. I also replaced interfacing with a sturdy cotton fabric sandwiched between my main linen fabric in the collar stand and collar which worked a treat! I would say the pattern is medium/challenging with the stand collar, but the instructions are very clear to follow.

    Very happy with this sew.
An oversize but not sloppy, cropped shirt.
It is cropped, so be aware, but my 22 year old daughter was thrilled. Nice collar and stand.
    I do recommend it.

I love the Archie shirt. I bought the bundle (Archie shirt and Barry pants) and made Archie in a linen fabric. It is a bit of an involved make, with a collar stand and double back yoke. I didn’t struggle with it though, found it quite straight forward. I intended to make it as an overshirt – should I make it to wear alone, I would have lengthened it. I am 175 cm and the hem sits just below my waist. As always with Style Arc patterns the size is very accurate and I made the size I always make, it is quite oversized so no need for any alterations. Very nice shirt that can double as a summer jacket.

I just finished work on Archie, size 12, in a linen-blend. I generally wear a ‘medium’ in garments and this one fits just right….except for length. It is, as noted, high-hip length. Since the garment has a wide open bottom edge, the shortness of the front requires that I don’t raise my arms in public or I need to wear a tank top or similar if my belly is to stay covered. I’m working on a way to add fabric to the bottom edge, overall, and to narrow the width. For reference, I’m 5’6” tall, short-waisted (high waist) and weigh 140lbs. For construction, instruction #8 says to double-fold the front turn back. They actually needed three fold overs to work correctly.

How Do I Know What Size I Am?

Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.

  1. When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
  2. Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
  3. When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
  4. You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth

Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.

B. Upper Arm Girth

This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.

C. Bust

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.

D. Waist

This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.

E. Hip

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
