BRIM

Fuse your fabric. With RST, pin the short ends of one of the brims together creating a circle; once in place stitch together. Repeat with the other brim.

With RST and matching seams, sew the brims together around the outside edge, clip the seam, press and sew an understitch on the side of the under-brim.

Turn out, press the brim edge, then baste the inside edges.

OPTIONAL BRIM STITCHING: You may choose to change to a top stitch thread, lengthen the stitch slightly and top stitch the brim. Top stitch on the top of the brim, 1cm (3/8”) from the edge, and continue in intervals up the whole brim.

MID HAT

With RST and matching notches, sew the short end seams of the mid hat’s main fabric together. Repeat with the lining. Press seams open. You may choose to sew a top stitch to each side of the seam.

CROWN AND COMPLETION

With RST and matching notches, pin the mid hat to the crown’s main fabric.

Repeat with the lining fabric leaving a turn out gap of 10cm (4”) as marked on the pattern.

With RST, take the main fabrics mid panel and line up the seams with the upper brim seams and matching notches, pin into place. Carefully sew together, making sure you don’t have tucks.

Repeat this with the lining to the underside of the brim, sandwiching the brim between the lining and the main fabric.

Carefully turn the hat out through the gap. Hand sew the gap closed.

Press your new hat.

With RST, match the main and lining at the split as marked on the pattern, pin into place. Sew around the split as indicated on the pattern.

Carefully cut through the centre of the split, 6mm (1/4”) short of the ends, snip into the corners. Turn one side of the scarf through the split, so the fabric is WST.

Starting at the shorter end of the stole, twist the fabric around so they are RST. Sew the main and lining together, matching the corners, as far as the notches on the sides. Clip the corners and turn out.

Repeat step 3 with the longer end, you will need to tuck the short end inside. Make sure to leave a gap in one side only noting the opening gap marked on the pattern for turning out.

Turn out through the gap and hand sew the gap closed.

Clip any loose threads and carefully press your new stole/ scarf.
