Q & A with @sew_dopamine

1. What made you choose the Bob Woven Pant and Byron Woven Top patterns from Style Arc, and what inspired you to combine the two to create this beautiful set?

The fun and impactful simplicity of the Bob pants drew me in as soon as I saw them. Because the fabric I was working with didn’t have much drape, I knew that they would hold their shape and work well to show off the unique design of the legs. Similarly, the classic square neck and clean lines of the Byron Woven top are what appealed to me. They seemed to perfectly complement each other as a set!

2. Who taught you to sew, and when did you first start? Can you share any early experiences that shaped your sewing journey?

I’m self taught, first started 10 years ago making clothing and other items for my daughter. The very first thing I sewed was a burp cloth! In those early days I suffered a lot of analysis paralysis; have always been and still am a massive over thinker, but I’ve learnt now that I need to just take the leap and start on projects

3. You’ve shared some fantastic pieces from your travel wardrobe – what are your go-to tips for creating a versatile, stylish travel wardrobe using sewing patterns?

I think it’s important to keep practicality front of mind. Fabric choices that suit the climate, pattern designs that will allow for respecting cultural sensitivities at the destinations, how it will wear fresh out of the suitcase, and lastly staying true to your personal style (as tempting as it would be to invent a “travel persona” 😂). I put a lot of work into sewing my travel wardrobe, I’d like it to be in a style that I’m comfortable in and will keep wearing for years to come! Biggest tip – don’t put too much pressure on yourself to panic sew before a trip!! I need to remember this too 😂

4. Sewing can be both rewarding and sometimes a bit challenging – what keeps you motivated to keep sewing, and do you have any advice for staying inspired during a long project?

My biggest source of inspiration is seeing the creativity and skill of other sewists! Each interpretation of a pattern, unexpected colour and fabric pairings, the special attention paid to every intricate detail – it all opens up my eyes to new possibilities and concepts! And seeing them tackle difficult patterns and techniques makes the impossible seem possible. For the long complicated projects, it helps to focus on one step at a time rather than stress myself out thinking about how much there is left to do. It also helps if you’re lucky enough to have a sewing buddy who is starting the same project at the same time! Makes for a fun journey when you can swap notes and cheer each other on!
