We adore the bold print of the Palmer Woven Dress paired with Mari-Liis’s belt! As we daydream about sunny days here in Melbourne, it’s wonderful to see this lively cotton linen print from @abakhanbrand come alive.

Mari-Liis has been gifted a $40 Style Arc voucher as Maker of the Month.

Meet the Maker of the Month - Mari Liis

Q & A with Mari-Liis (@thelatenightsewist)

1. What inspired you to start sewing?

I have been on and off sewing since childhood when I made Barbie clothes, using tiny patterns from a special sewing book for Barbie dolls. This taught me quite a bit about how flat pieces of fabric turn into a fitting garment and the garments were quite intricate as well: coat with a hood and facing for example.

I stopped sewing while at the university but in about 2010 while living in Greece I saw a sewing magazine on display at a newspaper stand and the emotion was so strong that I just went and bought a sewing machine and started making clothes for myself.

Today basically all my wardrobe is me-made, the exceptions are only underwear and sports clothes. The rest I make myself.

2. Which Style Arc pattern is your favourite to make, and why?

This is a tough one to answer, I have used several patterns multiple times, I guess they would be the Audrey and Christia Pants, Palmer Dress, Clementine Dress, Stacie Jean Jacket and Janie Blazer.

I love them because they fit well and look modern, something you can find in a store. Also, I like that the sizing is very consistent, I own and have sewn many SA patterns, but there have been only two cases where the fit was different from expected.

And finally, I really like your illustrations/ technical drawings of the patterns!

3. Can you share any tips or tricks you’ve learned while working with Style Arc patterns?

I love the front fly tutorial; it is wonderful how it is so easy and always gives great results. Also, I have started sewing in seam pockets according to your tutorial and it is so much better than any other option I have seen.

4. What advice would you give to someone just starting their sewing journey with Style Arc?

For anyone starting with SA I would say that although especially some older patterns have more general instructions, there is a vast library of tutorials on the website so don’t be intimidated at first by the seemingly short instructions.

The newer patterns are also much more detailed.
