1) What inspired you to start sewing, and how did you discover Style Arc patterns?
I started sewing after I finished school and was accepted to a lovely little fashion institute. I love the methodical nature of sewing; follow each step, press, stitch, press again. I discovered Style Arc patterns through suggestions by others on a Facebook sewing page!
2) Which Style Arc pattern is your favourite to work with and why?
There are so many gorgeous patterns but two of my favourites are Queenie and Millicent. So versatile and easy to adapt. Queenie for the basic block nature of the pattern pieces- it’s now a staple that I use to create my own patterns. Millicent for the short sleeves! They’re my absolute favourite sleeve design.
3) What comes first the sewing pattern or the fabric?
A bit of both! I usually shop for patterns and fabrics during sale times. Honestly though, it’s usually the fabric first, I like to say I have a curated collection of fabric art. Sewing and buying fabric are two different hobbies… right?
4) What advice would you give to someone interested in learning to sew?
Find a good teacher or someone who can point you in the right direction (even if it’s YouTube videos!). Sewing is a bottomless pit that can be overwhelming and causes so many to give up.
Once you’ve done that, persist!! Practice! Sew a continuous lap band to get your seam allowance correct and your straight stitching down pat, find a simple pattern you like and sew it multiple times, get to know your sewing machine like the back of your hand, do the same skills over and over until you can’t get it wrong. As I tell my own students; be brave enough to be bad at something new… until you’re good!
