I’ve sewn for several decades. I, as others have started, found the instructions lacking details/illustrations. I really love the completed jacket. I sizes up for a bulkier jacket, but didn’t need to. Changes I’ll make next time are to increase the size of the front pockets, pay more attention to the matching of the bottom ribbing (bottom of fabric and lining were off), and not go up a size.

I am pleased with my finished jacket. But I had never done pocket welts, or zip tape before and the instructions were very limited. After a lot of thinking and watching YouTube video’s I managed to do the pocket welts and then on to tackle the zip tape which was easy once I had a good think. I didn’t put the sleeve zip in and didn’t line it. For a first attempt I am pleased with it and it will be a nice light jacket to wear in the spring. I made it from a thick knit remnant which I think is called scuba. I made a size 18 and when I make it again might shorten it a bit. I have learnt a lot by making this.

Just finished styleARC Bobbi Bomber with Joni Track Pant. I shortened the bomber and eliminated the pockets and lining as I made everything out of stretch Bamboo. I added ribbing and piping for the shoulder and pant details.
The zipper tape part I had never done before so that made my head hurt a bit but it all worked out.

The bomber fits really well, and the style is great. I ended up shortening mine a bit as I wanted it to “blouse” over more. I am a US size 12, so I ordered the 18, and it fits well. I will probably make another, and the only thing I’d change are the pockets. I might move them up and away from the front zipper a bit. My only complaint is that the directions are hard to follow. I am used to step-by-step instructions with visuals, and these do not deliver. I think some graphics breaking down the construction (welt pocket, zipper tape, etc.) would have helped. Fortunately there’s youtube and my classmates, otherwise I would have been lost. Saying that, it’s great jacket, so give it a whirl!

How Do I Know What Size I Am?

Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.

  1. When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
  2. Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
  3. When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
  4. You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth

Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.

B. Upper Arm Girth

This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.

C. Bust

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.

D. Waist

This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.

E. Hip

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
