Lovely pattern – I drafted a facing for the curved hem, shortened the sleeves to have a 3.5cm turn-up and made the belf 3.5cm wide and longer.

Here is a tutorial which uses the same method for the pockets:

Hacked this a bit to make an elastic waist, cut the back and front across the middle and cut the front skirt on the fold so I didn’t need to continue the buttons on the skirt.

Love the result, I used a very lightweight Oxford cotton and this is perfect for hot days, nice and roomy so the air can circulate freely! Already have plans to make another one from a checked linen.

This is a great shirt dress pattern. I like it because it is a good length (I made the longer length) it is easy and breezy to wear and very easy to sew. I also often find with Style Arc patterns that the sleeves are not finished well, however with this pattern the sleeve was an excellent length and the turn-up makes the sleeve sit nicely. I did make some adjustments. I made the collar as instructed, however when I attached it, the collar’s small size looked out of proportion to the dress, which is quite flowy. So I unpicked the original collar and cut out another one, adding two centimetres to the width. This alteration looked a lot better than the original. Against my better judgement, I tried to follow the Style Arc instructions for adding the pockets but that was a waste of time. As with many Style Arc instructions, they were incredibly confusing and sparse, so the pocket turned out terribly. So I unpicked the one pocket I’d tried to do “properly” and just re-did them in my own way. It’s a really good shape for a shirt dress, and I’ll definitely be making more for summer, and keeping my amendments. Recommended.

How Do I Know What Size I Am?

Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.

  1. When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
  2. Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
  3. When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
  4. You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth

Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.

B. Upper Arm Girth

This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.

C. Bust

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.

D. Waist

This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.

E. Hip

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
